(https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings.jsp?title=2023&displayColumn=2)
While Chiang Mai has its challenges, such as poor air quality and intense heat between March and April, the city offers a wealth of advantages that make it an appealing destination for various reasons. Here are three key factors to consider:
1, Safety First: Chiang Mai holds the rank of the 21st safest city in the world, according to the Numbeo Quality of Life Rankings for 2023. (https://www.numbeo.com/quality-of-life/rankings.jsp?title=2023&displayColumn=2) This ranking underscores the city's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors.
2, Favorable Climate and Working Conditions: The climate is generally pleasant from May to January due to the city's mountainous location, situated just 100 km away from Thailand's highest peak, Mt. Doi Inthanon. (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Chiang+Mai+International+Airport+ท่าอากาศยาน+เชียงใหม่/Doi+Inthanon,+Ban+Luang,+Mae+Chaem+District,+Chiang+Mai+50270/@18.6148617,98.4675777,10.37z/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x30da3088e698f189:0xa02474e3fd934597!2m2!1d98.9681891!2d18.7692428!1m5!1m1!1s0x30dbaa9c1c7fd96b:0xf3f01fb3a96c7054!2m2!1d98.4870612!2d18.5880431?entry=ttu) In addition to the climate, Chiang Mai offers an ideal work environment, boasting close to 40 co-working spaces and thousands of cafes. For a mere €2, you can enjoy a cup of world-class, hand-poured coffee. These features have made the city increasingly popular for hosting hackathons and bootcamps.
3, Rich Cultural Heritage: Once the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai is a treasure trove of historical and cultural landmarks. Although its unique high-mountain Asian culture has largely been assimilated into modern Thai identity, remnants of its distinct, gentle character persist. This culture, notable for its native form of anarchism and skepticism toward centralized governance, is elaborated in the book 'The Art of Not Being Governed'. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_Not_Being_Governed) To fully grasp the local ethos—from communal property views to social structures—a visit to the city's 20+ museums (https://wanderlog.com/list/geoCategory/142183/best-museums-in-chiang-mai) and a deep dive into its history are highly recommended. Notably, the community even has public-good traditions, such as monks fundraising for ambulances to serve underprivileged citizens, which further enriches its cultural tapestry.
Few cities offer such a compelling blend of safety, work-friendly environment, and deep-rooted culture as Chiang Mai does. I regret that I haven't participated in Zuzalu Montenegro, and I only know a little about ZuConnect, but many friends have shared their experiences with me. So, I believe that either event, when it takes place in Chiang Mai and resonates with local history and culture, it's surely will make us reconsider the present and the future. Although I'm not that ready to consider Chiang Mai as my 2nd home, I still wholeheartedly hope that everyone can get to know Chiang Mai through deep local experiences, in the way the social experiment as Zuzalu. Feel free to ask me anything about Chiang Mai and y’all are more than welcome! Thanks.
